19.10. This film is boring as balls, but highly interesting material for anyone interested in the psychological side of holocaust and totalitarian state. For example, this is not subtle in any way, but very preachy,because that's pretty much how authoritarian psychology works: people don't and can't have any thoughts of their own, but they must be told what to think by the leader or some expert under his command. Compare this to the Triumph of Will for example, which was made at the beginning of Nazi era when most people hadn't accustomed to that kind of thinking.

Field Marshal: The Life and Death of Erwin Rommel

23.10. Surprisingly boring book. Maybe Rommel didn't have that interesting life story, so what can you do. I think the writer really wanted to emphasize, how Rommel wasn't a Nazi and didn't take part in the atrocities. All the additional details were more interesting than the main subject.

Even though serving in German army during WW2, Erwin Rommel was a true professional who took his job seriously and acted honorably despite all the political leanings of the time. He was known as a chivalrous man who respected his enemies and treated even his prisoners well and in turn was respected. He was forced to commit suicide because Hitler suspected Rommel had involved in the failed assassination plot Operation Valkyrie. After the truth about his death and possible involvement became public knowledge, his reputation went even better all around the world.
