Rango
27.5. Gore Verbinski's best film, easily. The man has a great sense of visual style, but the live-action antics clearly keep him down from blossoming. Here the man truly shines, despite being all cgi there's a lot of genuine personality and the timing is almost perfect throughout. The man truly deserved his Oscar.

Miles Davis: The Definitive Biography
25.5. One of the best biographies I have ever read. The beginning is a bit slow, but when the real stuff begins, it gets really detailed and clears lots of vague myths about his life, like the mysterious disappearance of the late 70's, which was due to his severe health issues, depression and drug addiction. The man lived with painful hips and joints for decades of his life and had to eat a mountain of pills just to be able to do his job. At the end of the day his body was a wreck and he could barely hold his instrument anymore.

Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas (2003)
24.5. The fact that they actually made this film baffles me, since the hand-drawn films were already on decline, the markets were saturated and the last few films of theirs flopped already. Not just that, but basic adventure films like this have never been as big as musical fairy tales. As for the film itself, I don't think it's any bad, but it is less good than the last two or three DreamWorks films. Crappy cgi mixed with more traditional animation makes it look very dated.

Mikä vasemmistoa vaivaa?
23.5. A book about the problems of modern leftism. The author has many fascinating and even valid points about the left not being able to quantify or use quantifiable methods and stuff, but the overall text is just your typical humanist flatulence with nice words, lots of philosophical insight and big ideas with very little concrete content. I can give the main problem with the left right here and now, and I don't even need 200+ pages to tell what it is. The problem is that the common working class people tend to be very down to earth and relatively conservative, they don't care about high ideals or abstract concepts, they just want someone to fight for their rights. The modern left is all about abstract ideals, vanity and elitism, the common leftist nowadays isn't blue-collar worker but a bourgeois liberal who loathes all those uneducated and brutal peasants. That's why the former leftist voters have largely started to support more concrete, conservative and down to earth populist movements all across the globe and the funniest thing is that the self-important leftists don't seem to understand this phenomenon at all. This is ultimately why Brexit happened, Donald Trump won the presidency back in the 2016 and many other populist movements have grown immensely since and will most likely keep growing.

Seder-Masochism
23.5. I didn't have a slightest idea that Nina Paley had released a new film. Seder-Masochism is more or less the same as Sita Sings the Blues, but the central theme revolves around femininity and patriarchal religions. I'm not going to lie, but I really didn't like this one. It's still one big stream of consciousness, but this time they didn't have enough budget to get any professional actors onboard, so they had to do everything themselves. The end result is just a chaotic mess with occasional interesting parts, but the wonderful magic of Sita is mostly gone.

The Prince of Egypt
21.5. Damn, I didn't remember this film was this good. From the animation standpoint alone it's one of the best ever, but the storytelling is also kickass and the soundtrack just nails it, I even like the usually lame musical numbers. Do not be fooled, this is not a film for kids but adults and the plot and the characters aren't as shallow as they might seem at first. I think the misguided marketing destroyed this film for lot of people who still think this as either a Disney musical or biblical propaganda when it's more like an operatic historical epic with Chaplin-like drama-comedy.
