Back when I started my film hobby, Mamoru Oshii was my man. At first I only knew one or two of his films, but the more I researched his career, the more wildly creative person I found behind the art. Oshii first made name for himself by directing Urusei Yatsura back in the early 80's, and even back then he was known for being a very unique and entertainingly weird artist, and it just got more interesting after that. Studio Ghibli once considered Oshii a possible candidate for a third big name director, but it seems his style is so different it didn't fit the bill. Ghost in the Shell is one of the best, most intellectual anime films ever and Patlabor films are right up there. After that his creativity and energy have slowly diminished and today Oshii is only a shadow of his former self. Maybe Oshii just doesn't have anything to prove anymore and he's just doing less ambitious projects for fun.
