Daria is a smarter and more sarcastic cousin of Beavis & Butt-head, clearly made for people who didn't like Mike Judge's more edgy and over the top series. Some could say it's even better.
Part of the fun for me is that the wisecracking main character and her artistic goth friend are exactly like my sister and her own teenage posse.
Like there's this one joke where some dude tries to ask Daria for some exam answer and Daria gives him the most insane thing she can possibly think of. That actually did happen. Here's how it all happened:
Once my sister noticed somebody tried to copy her exam answers so she wrote the most insane and retarted things she could come up with, and only wrote down the real ones when she knew that the damage was already done. Later the teacher thought those fake answers were so outrageous and funny she read them aloud and the whole class ended up laughing their asses off while this one guy just sat there embarrassed and sweating bullets. This really happened.

This novel consists of multiple vaguely connected shorter stories about perverse love and obsession, madness and death. It's not as easy read as you would think and there might be lots of references Europeans wouldn't get, but it's still a great book.

What the heck was that? Troma went full 80's kids' cartoon with this and it's just as stupid as it might sound. The best part of this show is the ironic tone, which makes the overly political correct and clean dialogue feel very tongue-in-cheek and fun.
It's not that good, though. The people who made this actually knew the creators of TMNT and there were even talks of a crossover with Toxie, but it never went anywhere.

This novel is like a literary version of Citizen Kane, it's all about flashbacks and complex circulating psychological narrative. It's even said that the author attempted to create his own written vision of visual cinematic language. Isn't that interesting or frigging what?
This isn't an easy and quick read, though. You should at least be aware of this stuff before checking it out. I wasn't at first, and it was difficult to follow.

The mother and father of all epic historical novels and my grand christmas project. First time I attempted to read this I had to stop before the first half was done, but now I made it to the end and it was great. Had I known that the best parts actually begin after the first 2 books (out of 4) I would probably had read this one way sooner. Totally worth it.

Now THAT'S what I'm talking about: an adult horror fantasy with sex, violence and a "superhero". Spawn butchers all the pussy MCU Disney kids' films without mercy, this thing actually has some balls.

A rich elitist artist ends up wandering in a jungle with bunch of other people. While they try to find their way through the darkness of the forest and the wonders it hides beneath the mysterious surface, the man thinks about his inner world.
What an interesting novel, very rich in both meaning and depth. Carpentier was clearly above most other writers of his time.
